Samsung shows crazy patent: A smartphone in L-shape
You can't help but be amazed: Samsung has been granted a patent for a smartphone that can be folded out if desired and then assumes the shape of an L. In practice, the unusual design could bring many advantages.
Shortly before leaving the smartphone market, LG once again caused astonishment: With the LG Wing, the South Koreans launched a curious mobile phone that had two displays that were arranged one above the other. The smartphone that Samsung envisions in its latest patent looks similar, but with a twist.
Samsung secures patent for L-shaped smartphone
Because instead of revealing the additional display via a rotating mechanism , Samsung uses a folding screen . It is attached to the upper end of the device and can be folded out to the side. When unfolded, the Samsung smartphone looks like an upside-down L.
In impressive images, LetsGoDigital and Concept Creator have visualized what the smartphone in the Samsung patent could look like in practice (source: LetsGoDigital):
It remains to be seen how practical such a smartphone would be. It is clear, however, that this design would certainly bring advantages - for example when multitasking. For example, users could chat with their friends on WhatsApp at the bottom of the screen while watching a video at the top . And the folded folding screen could be used as a viewfinder on the back to capture engaging selfies with the main camera. There are hardly any limits to the imagination.

Samsung's folding smartphones a complete success
Whether Samsung is really working on such a smartphone cannot be said with certainty. The patent was filed with the World Patent Office (WIPO) in mid-2021 and approved earlier this year. However, the smartphone would be technically feasible, especially since Samsung has proven with its folding mobile phones Fold 3 and Flip 3 that the young device category is full of future potential.
