Unlock iPhone with mask: what is Apple s new feature good for?
With the upcoming update to iOS 15.4, Apple is fulfilling a long-cherished wish and from now on will allow the use of Face ID on the iPhone together with wearing a mask. But how well does the new feature actually work, is the function good in practice?
The update to iOS 15.4 currently being developed by Apple is powerful, with a whole range of new features just waiting to be discovered. An absolute highlight is certainly the option to use Face ID (Apple's facial recognition) on the iPhone with a mask in the future . We've been wishing for this for two years now, Apple is finally making it possible. But what is the function good for, what should be considered?
Face ID on the iPhone with a mask: Apple's new function in iOS 15.4 works so well
The colleagues from MacRumors have already taken a closer look at the feature and share their experiences in the following video :
In practice, detection with a mask works surprisingly reliably, almost perfect for a first beta . Particularly worth mentioning: There is no loss of speed, Face ID works almost as quickly, if not exactly as quickly, with a mask as without a mask. However, the iPhone must actually be held in front of the face. If you only look at the display from the side, there is a high probability that the Apple cell phone will not be unlocked (source: MacRumors).
Apple uses the eye region for recognition, which must therefore not be covered. The use of sunglasses is therefore ruled out , but normal visual aids do not pose a problem and are compatible in this context, i.e. they can be used together with the mask.
If you want to activate the function, you have to scan your face again , but without a mask. In contrast to previous, rather unreliable tricks, this can be omitted during the scan.
There is even more in iOS 15.4, more about this in the article:
In general, the testers are completely enthusiastic about the feature. A special plus: Apple Pay and the support of third-party apps are provided by Apple . This didn't work with Apple's previous solution to the "mask problem," which uses the Apple Watch. A tangible advantage.
Only compatible with iPhone 12 and 13, not older iPhones and iPad Pro
But there is still a bitter pill: If you want to unlock your iPhone with a mask and Face ID, you should have at least an iPhone 12 or even an iPhone 13. Older iPhones with Face ID, i.e. an iPhone X, XS, XR or 11 are excluded and have to do without them. The iPad Pro currently also has to do without the feature, because the function has not yet been integrated in iPadOS 15.4. It remains to be seen whether Apple will correct this before the release in a few weeks.
