Mac 2022: Apple is making things easier
Why is it always so complicated? Apple's scheme for product names was and is not always very clear. Things could change with the Mac as early as next year and become much easier, as a recent report suggests.
Far-reaching innovations for Macs are planned for 2022. According to reports, Apple will introduce five new models. We can therefore expect a high-end iMac, a redesigned MacBook Air, an updated Mac mini, a new entry-level MacBook Pro and the first Mac Pro with its own Apple chip. But not only the technology will change.
Apple 2022: MacBook Air becomes MacBook
The rumor mill also predicts changes to the previous naming scheme , so it will be easier and clearer again (source: Dylandkt via MacRumors). In the end, there shouldn't be a new "MacBook Air", because Apple is taking the opportunity and simply canceling the "Air" . Instead, the "MacBook" is reborn without any additions to its name. We remember, between 2006 and 2012 and then again between 2015 and 2019 there was a model that was only called "MacBook". The latter was actually a kind of air back then because it was extremely flat, light and correspondingly radical.
The MacBook Pro received a new design this year:
Even now, the MacBook Air is Apple's entry-level notebook, so it would only be logical if the name were also taken into account and things were made simpler.
Another simplification is pending with the iMac. The upcoming model with a larger display and Apple chip should be marketed as the "iMac Pro" right from the start. For the customers it is then clear: Small display (current 24-inch model) not a pro, large display, same as a professional model. Up until now this was even more complicated, since there were now two models of the 27-inch model with and without a "Pro". In 2022 it will be easier and clearer again.
Even if it's no longer called Air, the new MacBook will probably be pretty flat:
Inconsistent ones persist
Although things will be clearer with the Mac in 2022, Apple will probably not consistently apply the naming scheme to all device categories in 2022. So there will not necessarily be an "Apple Watch Pro" next year and the "iPad Air" will continue to exist , since a simplification by omitting the name suffix is ruled out, after all, the simple iPad already exists. The Air is not an entry-level model here, but is in the middle of the field, between the iPad and iPad Pro.
