{Disarmed} Android 12 is here! The rollout will start later
Android 12 is here! The final version has now been approved by Google. Google has just handed over the final version of Android 12 to AOSP. This means that the latest Android iteration is final. But we still have to wait for the rollout.
The Pixel smartphones will not receive the update to Android 12 today. This emerges from a blog post from Google:
"Look out for Android 12 coming to a device near you, starting with Pixel in the next few weeks and Samsung Galaxy, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi devices later this year."
Pixel smartphones will be the first to receive the update, but according to Google in "the next few weeks". It is unclear why that is. Maybe it's because of other bugs that have yet to be fixed, or because more third-party devices are coming out with Android 12 at the same time. All pixels from Pixel 3 onwards get the update, the new Pixel 6 models then come with Android 12 out-of-the-box.
What's new in Android 12?
On the surface, it might seem like Android 12 is a pretty minor update. And somehow it is. But that's to be expected with an operating system that is as sophisticated as Android is today. The big feature that any Pixel owner will notice is Material You. Google is redesigning Android one more time.
With Material You, Android 12 will pull out some colors from the wallpaper and use them as accents in things like the quick settings, the clock on the lock screen, and so on. Google made this available for apps as well. And most of Google's own apps have been updated to support Material You.
The other big feature will be the privacy dashboard. This is a new dashboard in the Settings app that shows you which permissions have been used in the last 24 hours and which apps have used them. This makes it easy to see which apps are abusing the permissions, and these permissions can easily be revoked if necessary. Google also adds microphone and camera indicators to the status bar when apps use these permissions. So you can see when they are being used.
