{Disarmed} Microsoft Surface Duo 2 officially presented
Microsoft finally presented the new Surface Duo 2, the second generation Android smartphone with two screens, at the Surface event on Wednesday. The device has a modern chipset, 5G connectivity and a new Glance Bar to display notifications when the device is closed.
While the original Surface Duo didn't quite live up to the hype, Microsoft seems determined to fix these shortcomings with the successor. While the design is essentially unchanged compared to the original, the most noticeable difference can be seen in the outer case: The Surface Duo 2 is equipped with a triple camera on the back.
This has a 12 MP primary sensor, a 12 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and a 16 MP ultra wide-angle camera as well as a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor. This is a huge step forward compared to its predecessor and the unfortunate 11 MP sensor on the original. The selfie camera on the front has received a small upgrade to 12 MP.
Inside the device has two 5.8 ″ PixelSense AMOLED displays, which can be "combined" to form an 8.3 ″ PixelSense Fusion display with 2,688 x 1,892 pixels and an adaptive refresh rate of 90 Hz. Similar to the first model, these displays can be used in tandem or separately for multitasking and in different configurations. Microsoft even gave the displays a new trick called the Glance Bar, which allows them to show notifications when the Surface Duo 2 is closed, thanks to the slight curvature at the end of each panel.
There is no external display on the outside of the device. The inner displays are protected with Gorilla Glass Victus.
There are some notable improvements inside as well. The Microsoft Surface Duo 2 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, which also means it gets 5G connectivity, with support for Sub-6 and mmWave. Other notable innovations are Wi-Fi 6, NFC and stereo speakers. The battery capacity has been increased to 4,449 mAh to allow "all day battery life" with a slightly faster charge at 23 watts, although there will be no charger in the box. The RAM has also been increased to 8 GB and there is now a 512 GB storage option.
The Microsoft Surface Duo 2 is available in the same glacier white as its predecessor and in a new obsidian black. It can be pre-ordered now and is available for EUR 1,599.00. It ships with Android 11 on October 21st, although hopefully it will get Android 12 sooner rather than later.
