The Fairphone 4 is the Dutch brand's first 5G phone, and it comes with a ton of upgrades: it has a new design that's been built from the ground up - including a back that's made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled material. Polycarbonate is made up of powerful internal hardware, a larger battery, and more memory and storage space.

The Fairphone 4 5G consists of 14 materials that come from ethical sources: The vibration motor is made of fair-mined tungsten from Rwanda, the magnesium plate behind the screen is made of 30 percent recycled magnesium alloy, gold from fair trade, aluminum from suppliers of aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard and Recycled Tin. The phone is the first zero-waste mobile phone as Fairphone recycles one phone for every Fairphone 4 sold.

The Fairphone 4 5G has a 6.3 ″ FullHD + display with a Gorilla Glass 5 layer, a Snapdragon 750G with 5G connectivity, 6 GB of RAM with 128 GB of storage space or a high-end model with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage space and a 3,905 mAh battery that is removable. There is dual SIM connectivity via an eSIM, NFC and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Another innovation this year is the waterproofness according to IP54; the Fairphone 4 is dust and splash proof. While it's not as rugged as IP68, Fairphone says it chose IP54 because it still gives customers the ability to swap out the internal hardware without breaking the seals that are necessary for water resistance.

The design includes eight modular parts that are user-replaceable. Fairphone will sell the replacement parts directly on its website, making it easy to replace the screen or battery if necessary. Another positive innovation is the warranty: The Fairphone 4 comes with a 5-year warranty that goes far beyond anything you can find today. The downside is that the warranty doesn't cover the battery, but the rest of the hardware is covered.

According to Fairphone, the battery can be charged to 50 percent in just 30 minutes thanks to the Quick Charge 4.0 protocol. The device works with any USB PD charger that has an output of more than 20 watts.

The Fairphone 4 also has a major camera upgrade and offers a 48 MP main camera with image stabilization, which is complemented by a 48 MP wide-angle lens and a ToF module. There is a 25 MP camera on the front.

As far as the software is concerned, the Fairphone 4 runs on Android 11. Updates up to Android 15 are guaranteed! The phone also gets guaranteed software updates through 2025, and Fairphone says it will extend that deadline to 2027 to deliver platform updates. It will also receive monthly security updates for the first two years. What is missing is the 3.5 mm jack, but there is stereo sound.

The Fairphone 4 5G will be available in stores from October 25th, with the 6 GB / 128 GB model being available for EUR 579.00. The 8 GB / 256 GB model will be available for EUR 649.00. The former will be sold in a single gray finish, while the second will be available in gray, green and speckled colors.
