Android 12: Quickly block camera and microphone access

After Android 12 has received a camera and microphone indicator that shows when an app is accessing it, the whole thing is supported by a cool security function: You can block the camera and microphone in the quick settings of Android 12. xiaomist shows you how to do it.

In agent films one can see again and again how someone accesses a cell phone from the outside and sees everything through the built-in camera, while the microphone transmits all conversations. Some want to avert this danger with masked cameras, but that doesn't help against eavesdropping. Now Android 12 finally has the answer: You can pull two switches to the quick settings to block the camera and microphone for all apps or services at any time.

Android 12 brings a lot of interesting innovations, especially with regard to privacy:

Android 12: lock the camera, switch off the microphone - how does it work?

Of course you can mask off the cameras and any microphone inputs as well, but that is definitely a bit too cumbersome to be suitable for everyday use. Those who still fear for their privacy will love some of the new features of Android 12. For example, the option to only give the approximate GPS position in Android 12 apps or to see every access to important hardware and apps in the data protection dashboard.

But locking the camera and microphone finally gives you an effective means of doing something yourself. Once activated, each app has to ask if you want to unblock it. Perhaps only then will it become clear who wants access to the microphone and camera.

This is how you can block the camera and microphone in the Android 12 quick settings:

Swipe the screen down from the top . The switches required for this may not be immediately visible. Swipe down a second time to reveal more switches . If you still can't see them, you have to drag them into the current menu. To do this, tap on the small pen at the bottom left . Now you can scroll down further and see buttons that were previously hidden. Tap on the buttons for camera and microphone access and drag them up to the current quick start menu .

Then - as you can see above - you have the option at any time to block access to the camera and microphone by simply opening the quick settings with the swiping gesture and blocking all access.

As soon as any app or service tries to use these hardware components, you will immediately receive a message and you can allow or deny access.
