GAFA before Congress. Today, the auditions of the heads of Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon
The heads of the world's largest tech companies will be interviewed today before Congress in the United States. This unprecedented event in the history of the industry may have an impact on the further development of the entire Internet.
Writers and makers of movies, series and science fiction games have been warning us about corporations for as long as I can remember. Nevertheless, mankind is giving private companies more and more power. Americans, however, are probably slowly waking up from lethargy, and the heads of global companies that de facto shape our thoughts, will now have to explain themselves.
GAFA before Congress
It is true that most of the management of companies from the so-called The Big Four has been called to the rug more than once, but today the most important representatives of each of them will appear in front of American officials at the same time. So far, it has not been possible to gather so many prominent representatives of the world of new technologies in one place for this purpose.
Who are we talking about? The questions of the American Congress will be answered by representatives of Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon, i.e. the creators of the two main operating systems for smartphones, the world's largest social networking site and the dominant e-commerce website in the English-language Internet. They will defend their interests like lionesses.
Google , Apple , Facebook and Amazon are afraid of regulations that could divide these empires.
Although these most important hearings are yet to take place, we already know what to expect from them - corporate heads, especially Mark Zuckerberg, will argue that additional regulations will open the way for China to dominate the US market. Hitting such patriotic tones is to prevent Facebook from breaking into several different entities.
Antitrust proceedings against Google, represented by Sundar Pichai, may be conducted in several ways. The company from Mountain View is a hegemon on the mobile market (due to Android) and among web browsers (due to Chrome). In addition, there are almost unrivaled services in the form of Google Maps, YouTube, not to mention the search engine.
Tim Cook will also defend himself against officials today.
Apple is in the heat of criticism over the App Store. The developers present in it have been complaining for years about Apple's commissions amounting to usually, with few exceptions, 30 percent. from purchase. The Cupertino company, however, defends itself with its arms and legs against giving up the proceeds from subscriptions and microtransactions, as services are the fastest growing branch of business .
Apple has accused Spotify and Hey of monopoly practices, among others. The successors of the legendary Steve Jobs will certainly not help the notifications that yesterday sent the Apple TV application to smartphones and tablets from the Cupertino company. She boasted of Emmy nominations in them.
Jeff Bezos , the head of Amazon, will also testify before the American congress.
The founder of Amazon has been in the heat of criticism for many years. Left-wing activists love to juxtapose the stock market capitalization of his and Elon Masek's companies with wages and working conditions in sorting plants and factories, some of which are located in Poland.
Will the four Internet giants manage to convince politicians that the way they run their business does not break the law and is conducive to the development of the economy? We will find out this evening, and we will be closely following the questions and answers provided by GAFA management. The example of Huawei has already shown us that American technology policy can have a huge impact on our reality as well.
