Berlin: From 2030 only electric buses
From 2030, there will only be electric buses in Berlin. In the next 10 years, all diesel buses in the capital are to be replaced by the new buses.
The Berlin Senate has signed a new BVG transport contract until 2035. The contract stipulates that in future only electric buses will drive through the capital.
So far only 61 electric buses are in use in Berlin, but around 1,500 diesel buses. By the end of the year, there should be 137 electric buses, and by the end of 2021 at least 250 electric buses should already be in use in Berlin. The BVG will cost the changeover two billion euros.
"This transport contract marks the beginning of a new era of investment. In the coming years, the BVG will renew, expand and convert its fleet and network in a climate-friendly manner and thus significantly improve it: This is exactly the right way to make public transport so attractive for Berliners and their guests that a switch from private car is easy "
Regine Günther, Senator for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection
