The recent demonstration of the graphic capabilities of the new Unreal Engine 5 has received wide coverage in the gaming environment. First of all, we saw a completely new, absolutely groundbreaking graphic level that will hit the games. Secondly, we also learned - at least theoretically - the possibilities of the PlayStation console. The entire show was launched on PS5 in real time.
Epic Games could show its engine on any powerful PC, but decided to launch it on PlayStation 5. Why such a decision? Is this just marketing to promote the upcoming Sony console? It turns out that the relationship between PlayStation 5 and Unreal Engine 5 goes much deeper.

It's no secret that Epic Games developers will love PlayStation 5. Engineers tout a more powerful GPU and CPU, but the most important is the extremely fast SSD. Read speeds are so great that Epic Games decided to redesign the key I / O subsystems of its engine so as not to waste the potential of the console.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will use NVMe SSDs, which are not new in themselves, but the whole snag is in speed. The PlayStation 5 drive has a bandwidth of 5000 MB / s, which is an absolutely amazing result.
For comparison, the current PlayStation 4 console has a disk with a bandwidth of 50-100 MB / s, but it is separated by seven years of development and completely different technologies. Modern PCs will be fairer competition. In their case, NVMe 1.3 SSDs with PCIe 3.0 interface work at best at speeds of 3000–3500 MB / s. The upcoming Xbox Series X will offer 2400 MB / s disk bandwidth. As you can see, the PlayStation 5 console SSDs are much faster.
In the upcoming generation of consoles, disk speed will determine graphics quality to a similar degree as GPU and CPU.
Modern SSD memories will allow you to load elements of the world much faster. Individual maps will be able to be much more complex, and textures will be able to have a higher resolution. Players will forget about recharging the elements of the environment as they approach them.
This gives developers completely new possibilities at the stage of game design. With multiplatform titles you will have to strive for a common denominator, and therefore the equipment with the lowest performance, but in the case of exclusive games on PlayStation 5 developers will not have to limit themselves.
And will the games really see such good graphics as the Unreal Engine 5 show?
Certainly not right away. Remember that although the show was rendered live, it was an in-engine render, not an in-game render. This is a fundamental difference, because the whole was not limited by dozens of systems that are in the final games, or even the console operating system, which also occupies part of the resources.
Remember, however, that Epic Games in 2013 showed the Unreal Engine 4 demo on the upcoming PlayStation 4 console . Then the graphic material also shocked by the quality. Practice has shown that after several years of play on PlayStation 4, they not only caught up with this graphic level, but even overtook it. There is a good chance that with Unreal Engine 5 it will be similar.
