Lakefield is to make us forget about ARM processors. It must be fast and economical
We heard about the Lakefileld processor for the first time when we announced the new Microsoft tablet . Today, Intel reveals the secrets of its first system inspired by the big.LITTLE design.
I don't remember the times when Intel was so defensive. The company is still undoubtedly a powerhouse and still has a handful of high-performance PCs in the market. However, it is gnawed more and more by AMD. And let's not forget that Intel has basically been completely banished from the market of ultra-mobile devices for ARM licensees.
ARM partners are bolder in the mobile personal computer market. You can now buy tablets and smartbooks with Snapdragon and SQ systems with Windows on board, and according to very reliable rumors, some Mac computers will be operating soon under the control of Apple A. ARM processors.
Intel's response to this threat is the Lakefield family. It's more than Atom's heir.
We received the first information about Lakefield systems when we announced the Surface Neo tablet, which was the first on the market to use them. This is the first to be mass-produced Intel processor resembling a big.LITTLE design. This assumes that the processor consists of cores with different parameters: inefficient but highly energy efficient and vice versa, i.e. efficient but power-consuming.
Due to this construction, it has been successfully used in ARM systems for years, at rest or for simple tasks only these energy-saving cores are used. Those that consume a lot of energy are activated only when needed, i.e. the high load of the device with subsequent tasks.
Intel claims that this enabled the reduction of the area of its existing (not specifically which ...) processors by 56 percent. while maintaining energy efficiency. High-performance cores are 10-nanometer Sunny Cove. The energy-saving ones are the Atom from the Tremont generation. The first Lakefield systems are to contain one Sunny Cove core and four Tremonts.
The processors are manufactured in a technological process that Intel calls Foveros 3D. In rest mode, they are supposed to consume only 2.5 mW of energy - which means a 91% reduction in its consumption by combining them with Core Y series systems. They accelerate 4K video processing, support Wi-Fi 6 and LTE.
The first computers with Lakefield systems are to appear on the market soon. These will be Samsung Galaxy Book S and ThinkPad X1 Fold.
