Identity cards for inspection. Facebook takes on the verification of popular accounts
Facebook will check if the account owners are what they claim to be. Before the presidential election in the United States, the company will verify the identity of owners of suspiciously popular profiles.
Facebook has long had problems with fake accounts. The company erases their billions year by year - in 2019 as many as 5.4 billion profiles were removed . A large part of them are recognized by the algorithms almost immediately and removed immediately after installation - they are not a big problem, because apart from Facebook's algorithms, no one even notices their online presence. However, the company is aware that not all fake accounts are caught at this first stage. Some slip through security, grow in the power of observers, and become disinformation agents over time. To identify them, Facebook intends to ask for the identity of their alleged owners.
Do you have a big profile and a bit behind your ears? Identify yourself
Facebook announced in a blog post that it is possible to ask owners of popular accounts that have a history of suspicious behavior or whose posts suddenly began to spread virally to verify their identity. If someone discusses this type of verification or finds that the document provided by him does not agree with the data given on the profile, then the scope of his posts will be reduced. If that person is the company profile administrator, they will need to undergo additional authorization.
For some time now, also in Poland, Facebook has asked to provide the company with proof scans to confirm its identity if we had a company website or a popular fan page. The company claims that this is the only way to verify that there is no bot behind the profile or someone pretending to be someone else. However, the obligation to share a scan of evidence with a company that deserves to be approached with very limited confidence can raise serious doubts.
Facebook takes care of the cleanup before the election
For now, this change will only apply to the United States. After the recent US presidential election, the company was criticized for being passive in the face of an unclear Facebook campaign. For many months, the corporation had to densely explain its allegations of lack of proper moderation and ignoring the involvement of Russian trolls in the presidential campaign. Given that this year's presidential election is approaching rapidly, it is hard not to be impressed that the additional account verification is primarily to protect the company from a repetition of image corruption.
