Edge 81 is here. And with it Collections and Dolby Vision service
Microsoft resumed work on developing its browser after temporarily pausing it due to a coronavirus outbreak. Edge 81 finally introduces a feature that Microsoft has boasted so much from the very beginning.
Microsoft, like Google, gave up the suspension of development of its browser. Originally, members of the Chromium project were to suspend publication of their overlay updates so as not to disturb developers involved in building web applications to help fight coronavirus . However, this idea was quickly abandoned, which is best demonstrated by today's Edge update.
Edge 81 is a Collections feature. For efficient grouping of websites.
Collections are a mechanism by which we can conveniently collect materials that we need for later. For example, a collection of encyclopedia entries to write homework. Market figures to write a report for the job. Products we need to buy. And so on.
The collections have already been tested for many, many weeks on Edge's development channels. So we had the opportunity to take a closer look and see how they work - more in this material . Unfortunately - to summarize the most important conclusion - it turned out that this function poorly copes with understanding what is displayed in Polish-language websites. It works great as part of the English-language Internet, but for most of us the usability of the Collection has been reduced to a minimum, maybe as a convenient storage space for sites to read later. Although I hope that in the future the Polish language will be significantly improved.
Video support in Dolby Vision format. So the highest possible quality on Netfliks.
Since version 81, the Microsoft Edge browser supports decoding video in Dolby Vision format. This is the HDR image format and it is also required to be supported by the display of our device. Dolby Vision and its competing HDR10 + are currently the highest HDR image standards.
In practice, only one of the popular Internet services offers quality in Dolby Vision - but not just any. This is Netflix, which today masters almost all proprietary productions in this standard.
Edge 81 is also a synchronization of saved payment cards and integration with the Windows system dictionary.
The Microsoft browser can, at our request, automatically fill in card payment forms in online stores. We were able to enter the card details into the browser, so there was no need to manually rewrite this information each time. However, the card details were stored locally. From the Edge 81 version, the card assigned to our Microsoft Account will also be automatically offered - which is convenient on all our devices.
Edge 81 on Windows 8.1 and newer now uses the system's spelling checker instead of relying on its own, local and independent one. The browser will check for languages that are enabled in the system and will synchronize settings and words added to exceptions.
