Chrome 81 is already here. It will make notifications less annoying
With some delay, but it is finally there. The new version of the Chrome browser is new to applications using augmented reality. Although many more of us will probably be happy about the new notification system.
Due to the rampaging epidemic of coronavirus, Google had to change its Chrome browser development schedule. Version 81 is only now appearing, version 82 will not appear at all, while version 83 is scheduled for mid-May. Google also notes that the above plans may change.
Let's focus on Chrome 81. The first new feature is Web XR support.
The Web XR Device API allows web applications to use the camera and device sensors to perform augmented reality tasks. You will no longer need to download specialized applications to, for example, check whether the sofa we are considering will fit into your living room. Developers will be able to embed the appropriate web application directly on the store's website or use the Web XR Device API for other purposes.
Notifications on icons.
The new version of Chrome will display a small icon with the number of notifications from a given web application pinned to the browser. These icons are intended to replace the notifications that are completely on the screen, which according to Google are too distracting.
API tests for NFC support are also starting.
Chrome 81 also includes, on a trial basis, the Web NFC API. It allows web applications to use NFC on our device to download information from it. What could it be useful for? Google gives an example of an exhibition in a museum with an NFC tag next to each exhibit that the museum's website launched on the phone could react to.
The Chrome upgrade to version 81 is now available for download on all mobile and desktop systems on which the Google browser is available.
