An American company is launching COVID-19 DNA vaccine tests. Bill Gates financially supports her

Inovio is another biotechnology company that focuses on a DNA-based vaccine. Its official name is INO-4800 and will be given to the first volunteers in the next few days.

The US Federal Food and Drug Administration has agreed to clinical tests. Everything depends on time, but so far only Inovio representatives have declared that the first batch of vaccines (about a million doses) will be ready by the end of this year. The rest of the companies declare that their preparations are ready for the beginning of 2021.

DNA coronavirus vaccine

Inovio already has experience in the production of DNA vaccines to fight coronaviruses. Their earlier preparation - the MERS coronavirus DNA vaccine - completed the first phase of clinical testing, which means that it was given to healthy volunteers and the required dose was determined on this basis. When creating a new vaccine for SARS-CoV-2, this is definitely a valuable tip.

As for the mechanism of the DNA vaccine itself, it consists in giving the patient a plasmid containing cDNA, which codes for the so-called protein pathogens of specific pathogens.

In this case, of course, it is the Wuhan coronavirus antigens. Specially prepared plasmids are processed by the vaccinated organism, as a result of which its cells begin to produce proteins occurring in coronavirus, to which its immune system begins to react, thereby creating the appropriate number of antibodies.

This process is very similar to traditional vaccines, except that the antigens themselves are produced by the body of the vaccinated person. Many studies also indicate that DNA vaccines are also more effective than traditional preparations. The world of medicine currently has over 400 DNA vaccines ready for use.

Thanks to funding from the Gates foundation, the mass production of INO-4800 will start this year.

Thanks to the work on the previous vaccine at MERS, Inovio is able to scale the production of its new vaccine fairly quickly so that by the end of the year it will produce about a million servings. Financing, which the company received, among others, plays a key role. from the Gates foundation. It all depends, of course, on how the INO-4800 will perform in the first phase of clinical testing, during which it will be given to 40 healthy volunteers.

If none of them develop any serious complications, then Inovio will be able to go to the second phase of clinical trials, which involves the administration of a vaccine for patients with COVID-19. It is very possible that in the current situation the FDA will agree to mass vaccination of patients in the second phase of the study, although normally tests are carried out on a group of 300 to 3 thousand. patients.

One of Inovio's major rivals is Moderna, which announced that the first batch of their DNA vaccine has already been sent to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in the United States. This batch will be used for the first phase of research.

The mRNA-1273 vaccine was designed by Moderna for the virus proteins responsible for infecting human cells. If everything goes as planned, the immune system of vaccinated people will develop appropriate antibodies in advance, which will prevent SARS-CoV-2 from being able to connect to lung cells in the human body.

When will the vaccine for COVID-19 appear in Poland?

An excellent question. Assuming the most optimistic scenario in the world, I would bet that our government would bring an effective coronavirus vaccine at the turn of 2020 and 2021.

And here we are talking about a really very optimistic scenario - representatives of the American health authorities say that full verification of a potential vaccine will take about a year to 18 months. Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says the time frame above would be a record pace anyway.

Unfortunately, the most realistic scenario is that SARS-CoV-2 can actually infect more than half of the global population before we can protect it. No state or its citizens can afford to maintain the current rules of social isolation until the vaccine is developed. Nobody knows how the infection curves will behave in individual countries after the abolition of currently introduced regulations.
