Microsoft completes Visual Basic development. This is the end of an important era

For people of my generation involved in information technology, BASIC was the first contact with programming. This was due to the fact that it was attached to the 8-bit home computers systemically.

Of course, many of us later learned more languages: fashionable was then considered to have the future of Pascal. Those who were interested in getting as much out of the machine assembled assembler. However, BASIC and the immortal 10 PRINT "HELLO WORLD" was what attracted many of us to programming.

However, BASIC (Beginner's All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) was such a supportive language that in 1991 Microsoft decided to create a modern IDE for it at that time and created Visual Basic.

It was in Visual Basic or in Delphi, the second pretender to the PC throne, that most business applications for Windows computers were created in the 90s. The ease of creating Windows forms, connecting to databases, and creating reports - all this determined wide business applications.

Visual Basic was already archaic at the beginning of the 21st century. Developers were beginning to have access to much better, object-oriented tools offering greater opportunities. However, there were two undeniable advantages behind Visual Basic:

  • The amount of code already written and used in companies
  • Microsoft support in building subsequent versions of their Visual Studio

It is thanks to this support that Visual Basic has survived so long. When Microsoft created the .NET platform at the beginning of the 21st century, it "pulled" Visual Basic with it. Since then, although most .NET programmers have learned much better C #, Visual Basic (sometimes abbreviated as VB.NET) has been introduced as an equivalent solution.

Indeed, support for this language has been stubbornly drawn for many years. Even today, when we use the latest multiplatform .NET Core framework, we can issue the command:

dotnet new console -lang VB

And ... get a solution written in Visual Basic for .NET, in which we can even create modern web solutions. Did many people use it? I doubt it.

Already in 2017, Microsoft began to signal the end of the joint development of C # and VB. New solutions were to appear only in C #, while VB was to receive only current support.

This week, Visual Basic enthusiasts have received another warning suggesting that it may be time to migrate their code base to something more modern. In the entry on the development blog, the .NET team announced support for Visual Basic in the upcoming version 5.0, but also mentioned, among others, important announcements:

From now on, we are not planning to develop Visual Basic as a language. We will support its stability with current versions of .NET libraries, but future functions in .NET Core may not be reflected in Visual Basic.

This is the end of an important era. BASIC, and then Visual Basic, has come a long way and survived several IT periods. Time to give him a break.
