Will Safari and Mail.app stop being the default apps on iOS and iPadOS? Apple is considering such a change
Apple is considering allowing iPhone and iPad users to change the default browser and email program. This would be a significant change in current policy.
During the endless discussion between Android and iOS fans, there is always an argument regarding the possibility of changing the default applications. Android users often argue that the inability to change the default browser or email program effectively discourages them from changing the system.
Bloomberg reports that Apple is seriously considering changing its policy and allowing you to choose your default browser and email application. Currently they are Safari and the Mail application.
The website reminds that with its tough policy Apple has repeatedly exposed the accusation of providing unfair advantage to its own applications.
Do we really need to use Safari and Mail.app on iOS and iPadOS?
Yes and no! The Apple software is indeed the default one and cannot be changed so that an open link from any program opens in a rigidly selected browser other than Safari, and a link to the email address in the selected email program.
However, if we use Chrome, we can easily make the email address open in Google, Gmail, and not in Mail.app. As you can see in the screenshot below, you can also choose the application each time. Of course, this is a half measure, but effective when we use the Google services ecosystem.
It also works the other way around. The link clicked in Gmail can be opened in the Chrome or Google application.
Apple is also considering "freeing" the HomePod speaker.
Apple's policy is not only the subject of complaints from competitors, but also proceedings in US and EU institutions. Spotify complained to an American company in the EU for a 30% commission for subscriptions sold in the App Store and the inability to use Spotify on a HomePod speaker other than through AirPlay.
According to Bloomberg, the Cupertino company is considering allowing music services other than Apple Music on HomePod speakers.
