Question for the opening of the week: what is the ideal size of a smartphone in 2019?
The smartphones have grown again. This is not a euphemism; if we follow the changes in device design over the last 3 years, it is clear that the phones are getting bigger. What size of smartphone is the best, however?
In 2017, we wondered what is better - a smartphone with a 5.2 "screen or a smartphone with a 5.5" screen . Today these considerations seem to be ridiculous, when in the same year the Galaxy S8 came, then the iPhone X, and our imagination about the perfect smartphone screen was ruined, because suddenly it turned out that changing the aspect ratio of the screen can fit a screen with a diagonal of 5.8 " in the body of a smartphone that previously had at most a 4.7-inch display.
Only a few weeks ago I wrote that smartphones started to grow again , but this time it was completely useless. And although only a few dozen days have passed since that text, I am beginning to think slowly that I have to bite my words.
I changed from a smartphone with a 6.6 "screen to 6.1". It hurt.
I spent the last two months with OnePlus 7 Pro , then with Oppo Reno 10x Zoom . Both have notch, both have screens with a diagonal of about 6.6 ". This time I can summarize as I did in the previous article:
I put the phone in my pants pocket - it does not fit. I try to put it in the car - it can not be done. Maybe I'll put it on the shelf in the center console? Too narrow.
Using the 6.6-inch display on a daily basis proved to be a challenge, especially when trying to fit a new, giant device for non-adapted accessories. However, outside these situations, the use of a large, beautiful screen with a huge diagonal is a wonderful experience.
On the smartphone I mainly read and watch video. And everything, everything looks better on the bigger screen. The text is more readable, it fits more. The video is more visible. Life takes on colors.
In the end, however, came the time when I had to pack Oppo Reno 10x Zoom into the box and put the card to another smartphone. This time smaller, with a more accessible 6.1 "screen and indentation .
I did not think that the difference would be so painfully felt.
At first I was glad that I could finally put my phone in my pocket and lift my leg without worrying about its damage. In the end, I could put the phone on the shelf in the center tunnel of my car and - hurray! - it was located. In the end, I could reach the top of the screen with my thumb, without juggling an expensive device in my hand. Advantages only.
It was enough, however, to start the first video on YouTube, so that the original joy would dim. Everything on the 6.1 "screen looks much, much worse than on a 6.6" screen without a note. The difference is colossal! And I'm not talking about the quality of the panels themselves, because both smartphones are excellent. I am talking about how content appears on the display of a given type and size, and here - unfortunately - the smaller smartphone turned out to be a much worse smartphone.
Suddenly, I started to have problems that I forgot on a larger device. The keyboard was too small. Text - too small. Indentation was irritating. It's been a few days since the change from 6.6 "to 6.1" and I still can not get used to the "tight" seems to be a smaller smartphone. Amazingly, switching to a larger screen did not bring me similar difficulties.
Larger versus smaller smartphone - pros and cons
Let's summarize, on the example of these two increasingly popular diagonals, what are the pros and cons of large and less large smartphones (because the little ones can not be called somewhere from 2014):
Screen 6.6:
+ Everything looks better
+ No notch favors immersion in movies and games
+ Have I already said that everything looks better?
+ It's easier to use two applications at the same time
+ More comfortable to write on the screen keyboard
+ Everything looks better
- Such a smartphone is nowhere to be found
- You have to have a thumb or rubber juggle to reach the top
- One-hand operation is basically impossible
6.1 "screen
+ Easily handle it with one hand
+ Everywhere fits
- Everything looks worse than on a smartphone with a 6.6 "screen
- If someone once saw a smartphone without notes and indents, it does not undo
- Less space for two applications at the same time
- It's harder to write on the screen keyboard
Sam after two months with large screens and returning to a smaller panel I am torn. On the one hand, I value the convenience of a smaller phone, on the other hand, I read and read so much and watch a video on a smartphone, to very much miss a larger display.
A good half-center would probably be a smartphone with a 6.4 "screen, but here I would like to finally see something without a note. For now, phones with this diagonal have indentations in the screen, or at least a hole on the front camera, and it's not the same as a panel completely devoid of "distractions".
What is the ideal size of a smartphone in 2019?
Now the question to you, dear readers - what screen is in your opinion the best of all available on the market? 6.1 "? 6.6 "? 5.8 "? Or maybe you miss the 16: 9 screens?
