Fujifilm GFX100, or 100 megapixels on medium format. It s a real monster among cameras
100 megapixels on a stabilized medium format matrix, fast AF based on X-T3 based phase detection and 4K films. This has not been yet.
Fujifilm GFX100 is to be a breakthrough camera, changing the market. If the reality coincides with the announcements, the GF100 can really set new horizons for professional photography.
100 megapixels on a 55 mm diagonal matrix is supposed to give a brilliant image quality
At the heart of the Fujifilm GFX100 is the new BSI-CMOS matrix, 43.8 mm x 32.9 mm (55 mm diagonal) with a resolution of up to 102 megapixels, developed especially for this camera.
In conjunction with the processor X-Processor 4 is to provide "the highest quality in the world with exceptional color reproduction" and work great with newly developed FUJINON GF lenses.
Backlit BSI matrix structure receives more precisely directed light, which provides an additional signal-to-noise ratio. Regardless of the higher number of pixels, the matrix is distinguished by a lower noise level, a larger dynamic range and a faster reading of information from pixels - Fujifilm writes.
Looking at the specification, I am exceptionally able to believe in the manufacturer's assurance. It is also worth noting that the camera allows shooting with sensitivity in the ISO 100-12800 range with the option of extending to ISO 50-102400. It also gives 16-bit RAW files and can convert them to TIFF format.
5-axis IBIS stabilization system with an efficiency of up to 5.5 EV
However, this is not the end of good news about GFX100. The device has a special 5-axis IBIS stabilization system of the new matrix. According to the manufacturer's assurance, the stabilization is to provide efficacy up to 5.5 EV when using the GF 63 mm F2.8 R WR lens.
The IBIS system works on the principle of moving the matrix, thanks to which the image is stabilized not only in relation to the up / down and right / left tilts, but also to the horizontal displacement and rotational movements of the apparatus. According to the producer, the entire shutter assembly is suspended using four springs, which is to minimize the effect of shutter vibrations.
This is great news, because the more megapixels on the matrix, the more likely it is that the camera will get the photo taken. With up to 100 megapixels, low shutter speed and portrait photography, the risk would be quite high. If the stabilization system and the new AF really work as well as the manufacturer suggests, the GFX100 can be the first camera with such a large matrix and capabilities similar to full frame cameras. And that would really be something!
Autofocus with 3.76 million pixels of phase detection is to set a new standard.
Middle-format cameras have made great progress in recent years, but they are still slowly setting up AF and are not suitable for photographing fast-moving objects. Fujifilm GFX100 is to change this and set a new standard. What?
The whole surface of the matrix contains 3.76 million pixels of phase detection, which gives almost 100%. covering the field of the frame. It's a system that has been adapted from Fujifilm X-T3 and X-T30 cameras.
Thanks to this, the camera can quickly and precisely adjust the focus - no matter in which position of the frame the subject is located. I am curious about what this means in practice and whether the GFX100 will be at least close to any full frame camera.
4K films on a medium format matrix for the first time
The Fujifilm GFX100 is also the first mirrorless camera with a matrix larger than the full frame, which offers 4K movie recording. That's exactly filming in 4K 30p (10 bits 4: 2: 2 signal going out and 10 bits 4: 2: 0 inward).
After selecting the cinema format (17: 9), the GFX100 records a video image from the area of the matrix with dimensions 43.8 mm x 23.19 mm and diagonal 49.56 mm. This is a larger area than many movie cameras provide in recent years, which is why filmmakers will love its high quality video image with low depth of field, wide tonal range and high ISO sensitivity.

The Fujifilm GFX100 has more extensive movie functions than the GFX 50S and 50R. New products are the H.265 / HEVC codec, the F-Log flat profile and the Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) function. It is also the first model in the GFX system, which has a cinematographic mode of simulating the photographic film Eternna.
Size and weight as in a professional SLR. Design as a concept
While the previous cameras from the GFX series tried to be as small as possible, the Fujifilm GFX100 is a completely different design. The camera is reminiscent of flagship professional SLRs like Nikon D5 and Canon EOS-1DX Mark II. Design refers to other models from the family, although in my opinion its design is much more refined. I will say more - this camera looks great! Its simplicity reminds me a little about the concept camera, a bit of a camera from the future, but nevertheless it is a production model with advanced ergonomics, referring to the GFX family.
The Fujifilm GFX100 measures 156.2 mm (width) x 163.6 mm (height) x 102.9 mm (depth) and weighs 1.4 kg. These parameters are almost identical to the Nikon D5 with 1.7 times smaller matrix, but also a heavy mirror. Anyway, these are the dimensions and weight well known to professional photographers, which will certainly help GFX100 to better settle on the market.
As for the professional body, it has been sealed. And in as many as 95 places. This is to protect the camera from dust and moisture.
To maximize matrix capabilities, the GFX 100 basic imaging module consisting of lens mount, image stabilization mechanism and image sensor is effectively isolated from the body panels. Such a structure with a "double structure" ensures precision and durability, minimizing the effects of loss of image quality due to external forces acting on the body. - we read in the press release.
The ergonomics of the GFX100 has been changed compared to the previous cameras of this series. There are fewer knobs at the top, and we do not find a characteristic rear selector. The whole is simplified. An interesting solution is the Virtual Knob Mode, which displays the image of the knob on the upper secondary LCD display. This rotary knob can be rotated using the front and rear control dials. The camera has an integrated vertical grip that will simplify portraits and work with large telephoto lenses.
The GFX100 has two additional auxiliary screens: a 1.8-inch LCD screen on the top panel and a 2.0-inch additional monitor on the back, under the main display. Until now, a similar solution has been used only in professional mirrors. The camera has a dual SD card slot (UHS-II), a USB-C 3.2 port, minijack sockets for connecting an external microphone and headphones, and HDMI.
The camera also has a detachable electronic viewfinder system that can be set at a different angle. OLED panel in EVF has a resolution of 5.76 million points. The viewfinder is distinguished by 0.86x magnification, it contains five glass optical elements and has been specially adapted to the 102 MP matrix.
The OLED viewfinder of the GFX 100 can boast a resolution of 5.76 million points and a 0.86x magnification. In addition, it contains five glass optical elements and has been specially adapted to the matrix of 102 MP.
In the back, the 3.2-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 2.36 million points prevails, which can be tilted in three directions.
Fujifilm GFX100 - price and availability
I do not often write about cameras that cost as much as some new cars described on the AutoLog. Well, for the value of GFX 100, Żomnik would probably buy a dozen old thunders.
Ready? Fujifilm GFX100 will go on sale at the end of June this year at a price of approximately PLN 47 999. For comparison, Hasselblad 1DX costs about 26 thousand. zł, for Fujifilm GFX 50S will pay us about 24 thousand. PLN, and the old Pentax 645D costs about 22 thousand. zł. However, the GFX100 is a much more advanced camera, even flagship, maybe even a breakthrough for the whole category, so its price reflects that. And looking through the prism of its possibilities, it is not so high.
