Did you laugh at the vertical video and what about a Samsung TV vertical?
"Vertical video? Have you ever seen a vertical television? "- I often see such comments under articles about video materials created in the era of smartphones. Meanwhile, Samsung really did it. Sero is a TV that can be set vertically.
Samsung Sero is a new television offered by a Korean manufacturer. The 43-inch QLED panel would not be more embarrassing if it were not for the fact that it could be set vertically. The TV stand allows you to rotate the screen 90 degrees from a vertical to horizontal position.
And you could say that this is not a new product, because we have a whole lot of professional monitors on the market with a pivot function, thanks to which you can set the screen vertically. This helps when editing photos - especially portraits - and especially when working on several monitors simultaneously.
Samsung Sero is not a product for professionals. This equipment was designed for the Y generation, i.e. milenialasach.
This means that there is no deeper philosophy behind the product or the desire to become a niche of professionals. This time, we're really dealing with a TV set designed to watch videos recorded vertically. It's a TV set that is just like the age of social media.
Sero will allow you to conveniently view Instagram Stories, Instagram TV, Facebook videos, or videos recorded on YouTube on YouTube. This type of content is more and more. In turn, if the user wants to watch a standard movie, he will be able to rotate the screen to the level.
Vertical movies do not bother me, but creating a TV with such materials in mind is a rather bad idea.
All the time - even in 2019 - you can come across opponents of video recorded vertically. The crowning argument is the one that speaks about the distance between the eyes. Man sees much more side to side than up and down, so the screens should reflect this.
Are you sure? It all depends on the type of material. I can not imagine watching cinema production vertically. I'm irritated even by the semi-trailer trailers on Netflix, appearing in the sections reminiscent of "relationships" in the mobile application of this VOD website. At the same time, I think that there are video forms that fall better vertically.
I mean materials created typically for social media, such as Instagram Stories, which we mostly watch on a smartphone. In turn, according to research, as much as 90 percent. of us is watching this type of material in a vertical position, i.e. in the natural position of the smartphone. We are too lazy to rotate the smartphone to a horizontal position for a few seconds.
Pion is a smartphone. The TV must hold the level.
Here we get to the bottom: vertical video (especially those created for the social media) makes sense, but if it is viewed on your smartphone, and therefore in a fairly non-aggravating, as if on the occasion of another act. Will such a format be defended on the TV? In my opinion no. The TV is associated with greater involvement, with watching in free time, in the living room, with much more attention.
However, I look at this idea through the prism of a Western European consumer, and the target market for Sero TV will be South Korea. As you know, those customers can be ... uncommon. An extravagant piece of electronics was valued at the equivalent of approx. PLN 6,200.
